From install to your first hello
— 15 minutes for the truly new

Time about 15 minutesWhat you need one smartphoneFor anyone who has never used AI

It's not hard. Install one app, tap one button, ask out loud, and you're done. You don't need to know much about computers. You don't need to type. In 15 minutes you'll be having your first conversation with an AI.

Preview — just imagine it before you install
Soon you'll be saying something like this.
"What can I make for dinner with tofu and eggs?"

And it picks two or three dishes and tells you.
Ask how to make them, or for an easier way, and it tells you that too.

That's all you'll be doing today. Not hard, right? Let's begin.

1Install just one app (3 min)

Open the app store on your phone.

That's the Play Store or the App Store.

In the search box, type one of these.

Try searching — any one of the three
ChatGPT
Gemini
Claude

All three are free to start. Any of them is fine. We have no relationship with any particular company.

Tap the "Install" button, wait a moment, and you're done.

Check: is there a new app on your home screen?

2An account is one button (3 min)

When you first open the app, a sign-up screen appears.

You don't need to make a new one.

Tap the "Continue with Google" button.

It signs you in right away with the account already on your phone.

Check: did the chat screen (the one with a box to type in) come up?

3Speak instead of typing (4 min)

This step is the heart of today.

Next to the text box there's a microphone button.

Tap it and just speak.

The first time you tap it, it asks "Allow microphone access?"

Tap "Allow."

Check: when you speak, does it turn into text on the screen?

4Three first lines (3 min)

Not sure what to say?

Try saying these three lines exactly as they are.

Say them as they are
"Hello. What can you do?"

"What's a good side dish for dinner tonight? I have tofu and eggs."

"My child (grandchild) told me about this app — am I using it the right way?"

When the answer comes, keep asking. Even just "Why?" keeps the conversation going.

Check: did you get an answer to at least one of the three? Then it worked.

5Just one promise (2 min)

This friend knows a lot, but it's not someone who will keep your secrets.

Don't enter (or say) your ID number, passwords, or bank account numbers.

Keep that one promise, and you can use the rest with peace of mind.

When it doesn't work

The mic does nothing when I tap itYou may have tapped "Don't allow" at first. In your phone's "Settings," find that app and turn the microphone on. If it's hard, show a family member this line — "Please turn on the app's microphone permission."
The screen is in another languageDon't worry. Tap the mic and say "Please answer in English from now on," and it switches to English.
The answer seems strange or wrongYes — sometimes it tells a plausible lie. It's not broken; that's just how it is. Using it for fun is fine, but for money, health, or appointment dates, always check with family or a professional.

This guide cites no figures — it's all for following along. The three app names are just examples to help you search; we have no ties to any particular company. Don't enter (or say) your ID number, passwords, or bank account numbers.
